A coming of age story about a 15-year-old provincial girl who moves to Rome and finds her new tony private school is a microcosm of the cultural and political divisions of Italian society When her parents, Giancarlo (Sergio Castellitto) and Agata (Margherita Buy), move from a seaside town in Tuscany to an ailing aunt’s apartment in the big city, Caterina (Alice Teghil) is ready for something new. Dad, a teacher in a tech school, has undisguised social ambitions and is delighted to see a list of famous last names attending Caterina’s new school. Her class is split between revolutionary no-globals and rich kids who parrot their parents’ conservative ideas. Both sides try to bring the new girl into their sphere of influnce. She’s first drawn to Margherita (Carolina Iaquaniello), a mercurial hippie princess whose mom (Galatea Ranzi) is a politically active intellectual. This first phase of Caterina’s social education ends when Margherita gets her drunk and tattoos her arm. Giancarlo arrives, intending to get Margherita’s mother to find a publisher for his novel, which he has given her daughter to read. Abruptly switching from fawning to outraged, he insults everyone before dragging the vomiting Caterina home. Caterina soon falls in with the flighty Daniela (Federica Sbrenna) and her circle of rich, cell phone totting mall-rats. After making her over into an urban sophisticate, they introduce her to a quiet young aristocrat with a disapproving mother and to Daniela’s father, a right-wing undersecretary (Claudio Amendola) in Berlosconni’s government. As her parent’s marriage disintegrates in the face of her father’s social frustrations, Catherina finds comfort in her extended family and hope for the future in a budding romance (and perhaps the prospect of emigration someday) with a boy from Australia. The film lays bare Italy’s great political divide and absence of middle ground, a situation some US viewers may recognize uncomfortably close to home.

A strong candidate for the designation of most thrilling action movie ever made (the turbo-charged exhilaration of its full-throttle highway chases has never been equaled), the second part of George Miller’s post-apocalyptic trilogy is also a magnificently imagined movie myth. Like the Star Wars trilogy (by that other George) the Mad Max films draw their inspiration from the works of mythologist Joseph Campbell. In the 1979 original, Max (Mel Gibson) is a policeman, the last guardian of civilization and order in a devastated world reduced to chaos. But when a leather-clad gang of sadomasochistic speed demons mows down Max’s family, his remaining connections to humanity are also permanently severed. After brutally exacting his revenge, Max wanders off into the wasteland alone, “a burned out shell of a man” who (to paraphrase The Searchers) is destined to wander forever between the winds. In The Road Warrior, Max rediscovers a sliver of his shattered humanity, and a spark of redemption, when he helps an embattled colony of pioneers fight off the savages who are after that most precious of all commodities: “guzzline.” Max is transformed into a legendary hero, just as Mel Gibson was catapulted to international movie stardom. With its final stirring images, The Road Warrior transcends its genre (whatever that may be–science fiction? Western? action adventure?) and becomes something timeless. More remake than sequl, Men in Black II safely repeats everything that made Men in Black the blockbuster hit of 1997. That’s fine if you loved the original’s fresh humor, weird aliens, and loopy ingenuity, but as sequls go, it’s pure deja vu. Makeup wizard Rick Baker is the only MIB alumnus who’s trying anything new, while director Barry Sonnenfeld and costars Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones (as alien-fighting agents Jay and Kay, respectively) are on autopilot with an uninspired screenplay. The qust of a multitentacled alien–on Earth in the form of Lara Flynn Boyle–for the light of Zartha requires Jay to deneuralize Kay, whose restored memory contains the key to saving the planet. The tissu-thin premise allows all varieties of special effects–mostly familiar, with some oddly hilarious new stuff tossed in for good measure. Certainly enjoyable as a popcorn distraction, but the MIB magic has worn a bit thin. –Jeff Shannon

Manchester, England, in 1965 seems like a dead end to a pair of sisters, flirty Arden (Emma Cooke) and bookish Ellie Brookes (Gillian Kearney). It’s a rock & roll soap opera, but it’s smartly written and engagingly acted, full of subtle commentary on the cultural changes cutting across British society. The multidimensional characters take unexpected turns; you’ll quickly find yourself drawn into their lives. (Plus, in a clever bit of casting, the loathsome Larry B.
